White mountain in Brno overlooking the city. There is a stone with an inscription: “Proletarians of all countries, unite! Proletarians of Brno were gathering here in 1869 led by Josef Hybes, to fight for their rights.”
Josef Hybes organized textile industry strikes. He was born into the industry. His father owned a weaving business.
He was arrested for his actions and expelled from Vienna. He set up a club of people interested in Esperanto. It had been the first one in Austria-Hungary at that time. He gave away his possessions to the poor. His wife got divorced with him because of it. His nickname was marshal of the poor.
He got a stroke while speaking at the senate (Upper house) for defence of his citizens on 15. 12. 1920. It caused his death on 19. 7. 1921.
