About Prago Union Band
Prago Union is a Czech hip-hop band. It was set up by Kato, his real name Adam Svatos, in 2002. Their albums Dezorient Express and V Barvách (In Colours) were awarded a musical award Cesky Andel. In total, the band has released 18 albums so far.
About Kato (Adam Svatos)
Kato was a member of a hip-hop band Chaozz formerly. He was the main writer of lyrics for the band. One of the good songs from Chaozz is Chaozz – Z prdele klika.
Prago Union’s lyrics are like poetry
Lyrics of songs by Prago Union don’t sound like tough rap as it is known from the USA. It is more similar to poetry. It is like poetry, but in a modern way. Surely much better than the poetry you were forced to read at school. The lyrics describe our lived lives in a way you can relate to them. That’s what make them unique.
There is a song in the Nekorektum album Prago Union – Pracujem na tom (feat. Pio Squad) where the lyrics go like this: “I’m constantly on the go, always running around – they call me a cocker spaniel. I work shifts as long as an undersea cable. I’m so completely committed that there’s no turning back. You just can’t tell what’s work and what’s vacation anymore.”; “I don’t have any bitcoins, but thanks for the tip on how to earn some spare change. I want to do it smart, not sweat blood.”; “Working from dawn till dusk at a corporate job—that’s not for me. I’m offering you a team. I am the corporation.”
As a dutifully working nation (and thanks to us working hard and keeping our mouths shut, we survived a couple of wars), I am sure people can relate to the lyrics. It can be a summary of an everyday rat race for some of us.
There is an another very good song Prago Union – Kandikát vět where the lyrics go like this: “Everything you ever wanted to know about a shit but were afraid to ask—here’s the answer.”; “I didn’t find what I was looking for inside myself. I wouldn’t give my right arm for what I did find.”
In my humble opinion, the shit embodies everything you can consume from the media nowadays or hear from “self-appointed experts”. Kato made it clear ontologically (ontology – a basic philosophical discipline of categorizing objects and ideas). He made the shit an all-encompassing category for everything. It seems like, we won’t need philosophers anymore.
Prago Union – Kretén is also a good song where the lyrics go like this: “And just because you throw it behind you doesn’t mean it disappears — more often than not, it ends up falling on heads of those who are/stand behind you.”
Indeed, the thing thrown behind can come at you from a vertical direction. It means from the top to the bottom. In reality, it can materialize in a form of job tasks assigned to you by the person on a higher rung of a corporate ladder who is an asshole and doesn’t even know how to manage a cash flow.
The object can also approach you from a horizontal direction. For example, somebody driving a car drops half-eaten ice-cream by accident and it hits your face. Thanks God, it is possible to solve this horizontal issue with washing your face at a washbasin.
The last song which I mention is Prago Union – Varování where lyrics go like this: “Maybe I’m a lot, but you’re the best. We can talk on the phone, but I have to warn you. I’m just a guy, too, and I don’t let people push me around.”
The lyrics of the song express quite clearly relationships between a man and a woman giving tips of what to do and what not to do. I believe if married couples listened to the song more, it would lower a Czech divorce rate of 50 %. I assume Indian people listen to the song as the divorce rate in India is only 3 %. Indians seem to be reasonable and skilled I must say. To learn Czech language just to listen and understand the song so that they can live long and prosper. Good for them.
Atmosphere at concert
The atmosphere was euphoric among attendants. Prago Union played from 7:15 PM until 9 PM. There were many attendants at the concert. The album release of Nekorektum was carried out by pouring Jameson whisky at a CD. Personally, I liked the choice of the songs sung. However, I could hear the audience clamouring for more songs from the freshly released Nekorektum album.
Beer tasted like water used for tidying floor (not even that)
Staropramen was on tap. The taste of the beer was mildly sweet. I got a feeling that I was drinking yellow liquid mixed with hard liquor. It tasted like a shot of Slivovitz was accidentally dropped in it. The price was 69 CZK.
In addition, it was forbidden to bring your own alcohol. All backpacks were checked at the entrance. I believe if there is a ban on bringing your own alcohol, they should offer you beer which is drinkable at least and for a reasonable price. What I can praise is that beer was served in ordinary plastic cups without a 50 CZK deposit. I think it was better for attendants from a logistical point of view. Especially, if people are drunk.
Conclusion and evaluation
The Prago Union concert was well-organized. They started playing on time. The atmosphere in the audience was euphoric.
What I must criticize is the quality of beer as well as communication abilities of bodyguards and security staff. The ones who let attendants in the enclosed area of the Energy Pub.
Each security person gave different information about where to enter the area and what would follow there. One of the security staff said I would be given a sticky band on my wrist. However, it didn’t happen. Another one couldn’t even communicate to me where the actual entrance to the pub area was. Moreover, expressions in their faces and not being able to say Hello reminded me of prison guards. Who knows? I guess it is a cultural archetype among the security staff to be like that. Perhaps they cherish it and are persuaded it is the right way to conduct.
Have you been at Prago Union concert yet? What do you think about lyrics of their songs? What is your experience with quality of beer vs a ban on entering with your own alcohol? What are your experiences with bodyguards and security staff at such events and clubs?
